Lab Created Sapphire Jewelry
Do you worry when you see the words lab created sapphire jewelry – whether it is a sapphire ring or pendant or charm that you were thinking of buying?
I know many folk worry that it is not a “real” sapphire but let me assure you that it is a genuine sapphire.
The difference is that instead of it being mined and being dug out of ground in some far flung – and possibly war torn country but we’ll get to that another day – some far flung corner of the globe, the lab created sapphire has been created in a laboratory.
Take a look at this beautiful
10k White Gold, September Birthstone, Lab Created Sapphire and Diamond Ring and tell me that it doesn’t look just as good as something dug out of the ground!
The sapphire is chemically identical to a mined sapphire – the only difference is that one was made by nature over centuries and one by man in a very much shorter space of time. So whether your sapphire ring is made from a lab created sapphire or a naturally created one it will consist of Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and if trace amounts of titanium and iron get into the crystal as it is forming it will eventually become a fabulous blue sapphire.
The aluminum oxide or corundum forms naturally into a sapphire through the heat and pressure of volcanic forces when the liquid magma cools and the minerals dissolved in it form into crystals. This takes millions of years.
Scientists are able to recreate these forces in the Verneuil process (flame fusion) and produce sapphires that are both chemically and physically the same as the mined sapphire.
The great thing is, of course, that because we can now make these sapphires at will, they are much, much cheaper than the mined variety. For lovers of sapphire jewelry – and aren’t we all
– this is technology to embrace.
